EXTERIOR DESIGN
HULL DESIGN
To go far or to go fast, the choice is no longer necessary thanks to the integral dinghy formula that adapts to a wide variety of sailing programs.
In designing the Sonate-Ovni 35, Philippe Briand's aim was to create a complete boat that doesn't force the cruiser to choose his sailing style once and for all.
The unique hull design of the OVNI is suitable for long distance blue water sailing, but also for coastal crusing.
She is a well-known extremely strong 11 m long full aluminum cabin sailing yacht with excellent sea behavior.
The manual lifting full body aluminium centerboard and rudder allows access to shallow, protected waters, and the ability to beach without sacrificing performance or safety.
The draft is between 0,55 m and 2,05 m depending of the position from the centerboard and rudder.
The centerboard you can move manually up and down with a rope via a pulley and lock it with another rope in the down position. If the first rope breaks, the centerboard simply drops down and is practically extended.
In a storm it gives you also the possibility to slide over the waves with the lifted centerboard.
Most sailboats capsize because they hit a breaking wave with the centerboard when you are surfing down a wave. This usually causes the centerboard to break off the hull, which then leaks, or the sailboat is thrown directly onto its head and capsizes.
The ruder consists of two parts.
The upper part is attached to the vertical pivots pin (javelin) behind a fixed wing with a heel and forming a propeller cage with the horizontal rudder blade further forward.
The lower part of the rudder consists of a blade pivoting around a horizontal axis. By means with a hydraulic cylinder operated which is installed inside the rudder and manually operated with a hydraulic device on star port side near the helmsman.
The transom it thus spared any unsightly mechanical installation and the rudder remains usable even in its raised position.
When you hit the ground with the centerboard or rudder it moves up and moves down again when you have later no contact with the ground.
The fact that you have moved the hydraulic rudder with the force of the ground results in the fact, that the hydraulic system has now a shortcut, because of a broken pastille. This pastille you must change, before you can lift up the rudder again with the hydraulic system.
Seriously: I don't know of any sailing yacht that is safer overall than the OVNI!
OVNI translated from French doesn't mean UFO for nothing. I always say she is the RangeRover of the seas.
Large, deep self-draining anchor locker for properly storing chain and rode, which works also like a crash box to protect the sailing yacht/crew in the event, when you hit - e.g. a container - something at sea.
Vertical electric windlass chain grab 12mm which can be controlled from the cockpit and bow.
The aluminium bow nose/bowsprit with double roller brings the headsail forward to improve performance.
There are 6 welded and bolted mooring cleats and 4 lip cleats fitted to the hull. Additional 4 cleats are fitted next to the winches and 4 cleats are fitted at the yacht mirror and aft arch for mooring, accessories, lifting dinghy.

GENERAL
With the upgrades over the last few years, just to name a few key words :
- ultra-modern electro-hydraulic autopilot
- ESS (energy storage system) with LiFePo4 batteries
- Shade and heat resistant solar modules
- Diesel auxiliary heating system
- Aluminum holding tank
- Modern sails
- Redundant bilge pumps
- Chart plotter, radar...
it is the best choice I could have made to sail this unique yacht with her fascinating silhouette.
She is an ideal combination of old and new.
